IV sedation
Intravenous (IV) sedation refers to the administration of an anti-anxiety or sedative drug directly into your bloodstream during treatment. IV conscious sedation is the technique that Dr. Seale uses. This is conscious sedation and is sometimes referred to as “twilight” or “sleep” dentistry. This technique is different than a general anesthetic that would be used in a hospital surgical room. A general anesthetic requires you to have a machine breath for you. IV conscious sedation allows you to be relaxed, comfortable, and have little or no recall of your dental treatment, while still keeping your protective reflexes intact. You breath on your own. You cough if water gets in your throat and you can respond to gentle instructions. These are all important factors for safe yet comfortable treatment.

The procedure
During IV sedation, a small IV is started on the back of your hand or in your arm. Sedative medications are slowly and carefully administered until you are comfortably relaxed. You are continuously monitored by an EKG machine that displays your heart rhythm, an automatic blood pressure monitor, and a pulse-oximeter that measures your heart rate and the concentration of oxygen in your blood.
