Crown lengthening
Crown lengthening is the process of exposing more tooth structure above the gum line. Sometimes this is necessary to restore badly decayed, worn, or fractured teeth. Other times, crown lengthening is used to improve the appearance of “short” teeth that are covered by an excess of gum tissue. Two basic categories for crown lengthening are functional or esthetic crown lengthening.

Functional Crown Lengthening
If a tooth is badly damaged, there may not be enough sound tooth structure exposed for your restorative dentist to restore the tooth. Functional crown lengthening is a surgical procedure that recontours the gum tissue and often the underlying bone surrounding one or more teeth so that an adequate amount of healthy tooth is exposed. This allows the restorative dentist access to the tooth so that it can be restored. Creating access and exposing enough solid tooth structure for a proper restoration is important to maintain the health and function of your teeth, bone, and gums.
