  • Soft tissue grafts

    Instructions following periodontal surgery

    Bleeding

    We expect minor oozing for up to 24 hours after the surgery; but if heavy bleeding occurs, contact us.

    Swelling

    Some swelling is normal after surgery. If swelling is expected, you will be given an ice pack to place adjacent to the surgery site(s) for the next two to three hours. Use the pack 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off, and so on.

    Medications

    Take your pills as instructed. Do not drink alcoholic drinks or take other medicine without checking. Take pills with a full glass of water or juice to lower the chance of getting nauseated. If you do become sick and it continues, notify us.

    Fluids

    Drink plenty of fluids for the next 2 weeks. DO NOT USE A STRAW!

    Diet

    Eat whatever feels comfortable, such as soups and soft foods for two weeks (e.g. instant breakfast foods). Avoid crunchy foods.

    Activity

    Reduce your activities for the next few days. Avoid running or strenuous activity.

    Brushing

    No brushing for 2 weeks (surgical site(s) only). Exercise caution not to injure the surgery site(s).

    Rinse

    Gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water after each meal to keep the areas clean. DO NOT rinse with peroxide.

    Avoid

    Smoking, alcoholic drinks for at least 24 hours – ideally longer, peroxide, and commercial mouth rinses for 2 weeks following the surgery.

    Sutures

    Sutures will not dissolve – your appointment for suture removal is in 2 weeks.

    Problem

    If you have any questions about your healing: Contact Dr. Seale at 979-776-0760. In case of an emergency, call Dr. Seale at 979-436-1682.

    Additional instructions

    1. For bleeding use a damp tea bag on site. Apply firm pressure for 20 timed minutes.
    2. If you have received a denture, partial or flipper, leave it in for 3 days and 3 nights. Take out only to clean and put back in. The 4th night start leaving it out.

    Sutures will not dissolve – your appointment for suture removal is 2 weeks from the day of your surgery.
