Frenectomy
A frenum is a piece of tissue in the mouth the extends from the lips, cheeks, or tongue to the gums. You can probably find one of your frenums by placing your tongue in the space between your upper front teeth and lip.

The Problem
In some cases, a frenum may be too large, too strong, or positioned in the wrong location. This can result in several problems. Excessive frenums can prevent spaces between front teeth from closing during orthodontic treatment (braces) or cause the teeth to separate after treatment. High frenum attachments can actually pull the gums away from the teeth resulting in gum recession and root exposure.
The lingual frenum, that attaches the tongue to the lower arch, can be positioned too high. This causes the patient to be tongue-tied and can severely limit the tongues mobility and/or interfere with speech.
